Maintaining your skin health isn't simply self care. The skin is your bodies largest organ and acts as a protective barrier against infection, UV damage and water loss. It also helps you respond to danger through sensory detection e.g., pain response. It initiates the healing process, generating new cells as well as closing wounds and regulates temperature.
It is easy to neglect our skin due to numerous factors. A few of these include the cost of medical grade skincare, work life demands, limited awareness about the importance of skin health, misinformation on product choice through viral social media platforms and TOO MANY OPTIONS! Lifestyle factors such as poor sleep, dietary choices, dehydration, medication as well as genetic predisposition can also impact our skin health.
Tip 1 - Skincare essentials
If you're on a budget, there are low cost medical grade skincare products out there. At Vision Aesthetics and Skin we offer Clinicare products as part of our budget friendly range to help clients achieve their results. Backed by science and nature Clinicare uses low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid, Epidermal Growth Factors (EGF), and Beta Glucan which assists with boosting hydration and cell turnover. Clinicare has a 4 out of 5 star rating and is well respected in the skincare industry. This rating is exceptional when weighing up the price and results the brand achieves (you get what you pay for). Nevertheless, there are other affordable medical grade brands on the market but as a clinic we don't like to over complicate the products we recommend. We also use Circadia & Dr. Simon Ourian (Information can be found on our website) however these aren't budget friendly and can be costly, the results however are high quality.
If you're on a budget keeping your skincare routine simple can help. This includes:
A cleanser - to remove dirt and impurities.
Moisturiser - a topical cream to maintain hydration.
UV protection SPF 30+ - it's important to use this on cloudy days too.

Tip 2 - Rest & recharge
Sleep is essential for skin health because it allows your body to repair, regenerate, and maintain balance. The recommended amount of sleep varies by age but the general recommendation for 18years + is 8 hours. Here’s how getting enough rest benefits your skin:
Boosts Collagen Production – During sleep, your body produces more collagen, which keeps your skin firm and reduces wrinkles.
Reduces Inflammation – Poor sleep can lead to increased inflammation, which can worsen conditions like acne, eczema, and sensitivity.
Enhances Hydration – Sleep helps regulate moisture levels, preventing dryness and dullness.
Supports Cell Turnover – Your skin renews itself while you sleep, shedding old cells and creating new ones for a fresh, glowing complexion.
Improves Blood Flow – Increased circulation during sleep helps give your skin a healthy, radiant appearance.
Minimizes Under-Eye Dark Circles – Lack of sleep leads to poor circulation, causing puffiness and dark circles.

Tip 3 - Fresh Pillowcase, Fresh Face!
How often do you change your pillowcase? we're all guilty of it! This is where the busy dynamics of work and life balance come into play. It is recommended your change your pillow case at least once per week and here's why:
Reduces Bacteria & Dirt Build-Up – Pillowcases collect sweat, oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, which can lead to breakouts and irritation.
Prevents Acne & Skin Issues – Dirty pillowcases can trap pore-clogging debris, contributing to acne and other skin concerns.
Minimizes Allergens – Dust mites and allergens accumulate over time, potentially triggering allergies or skin reactions.
Keeps Hair Healthier – Oils, hair products, and residue from your scalp transfer to your pillowcase, affecting your hair’s cleanliness.
Supports Overall Hygiene – Regular changes keep your sleeping environment fresh and prevent unwanted odours.

Tip 4 - Wash away the build up!
How often do you clean your makeup brushes? Ideally cleaning our makeup brushes daily would be gold standard but it can be a time consuming task. When we were younger cleaning our makeup brushes likely wouldn't have even crossed our minds...but it should. If you don't clean your makeup brushes and are prone to inflammatory skin conditions aim to clean these once per week. This will assist with reducing oil, dirt, bacteria and makeup residue which clog the pores and worsen inflammatory skin conditions.

Tip 5 - Embark on your stress free path to balance
Often we spending so much time working or looking after other people we forget to care for ourselves. Nevertheless it isn't even always as simple as that! Life isn't smooth sailing and personal events can trigger a stress response which can impact your skin health. Stress releases a hormone called cortisol. When our cortisol levels rise it increase oil product which can worsen inflammatory skin conditions. Cortisol also breaks down collagen and elastin through inflammation which are two vital proteins in the ageing process. Stress can reduce blood flow to the skins surface resulting in a dull complexion due to a reduction in oxygen and nutrient delivery because of constricted blood vessels and it can even break down your skin barrier resulting in an increase in sensitivity, redness and inflammatory markers. Stress can also effect the quality of our sleep which impacts our skins ability to renew and regenerate making fine lines and uneven texture more noticeable. The below considerations can help your towards finding balance:
Maintain a balanced diet - our gut is often referred to as our second brain. Poor gut health can impact the absorption of essential nutrients which act as building blocks for the production of essential neurotransmitters such as serotonin which assists with mood regulation.
Consider physical activity - whether it's a 30 minute walk a day, yoga, Pilates or the gym, physical activity will surely increase the release of endorphins which is a chemical that reduces stress.
Prioritise sleep.
Ensure adequate hydration.
Maintain meaningful social connections whilst respecting your own boundaries.
If your stress has been a longstanding issue and you're having difficulty identifying the cause or feel you've exhausted most options and haven't found them helpful consider talking to a professional.
